What can Andy Murray teach you about succeeding in business?

Yesterday i sat for 3 hours in front of the TV holding my breath. Watching Andy Murray at Wimbledon is never easy for us Scots. A nation full of disappointment when it comes to Sport more often than not: football, tennis, rugby......

Even though Andy Murray became the first Brit to win Wimbledon in 77 years back in 2013, he has been plagued by near misses and knock outs over his career. But, he keeps coming back, game after game, year after year. Why? Why does someone put themselves through that pressure? The eyes of a nation on you, ready to cheer when you win, and ready to persecute when you fail?

The will to win. That's what separates the winners from the losers.

A few years ago i was asked who my heroes were. Who inspired me in business? Who made me want to succeed, to triumph, to win. They expected me to say Sir Richard Branson, Alan Sugar or some other business mogul. But no, my answer surprised them, "Andy Murray" I replied. Why?

Discipline, persistence. Here is someone who has fallen down so many times but he keeps coming back. The mental strength of sportsmen inspires me. They sacrifice everything for their cause. The days, weeks and months of training both physically and mentally astounds me. They surround themselves with a support network that takes care of their mental wellbeing, their diet, their exercise regime. Having this team around you helps you to prepare and plan to achieve those goals and to win. And if you dont? Well they are there to help pick up the pieces, analyse where you went wrong and how you put it right next time.

It is just the same as running your business. You surround yourself with the right team of people and you all work hard to get to that goal whether it's sales, market share or profits. You focus, you sacrifice and you work hard. Andy Murray takes care of his body the same as you should take care of your business. Push it as far as it can go, and then push it some more. Game, set & match.
